Professor Goldmann’s research focuses on the protein and cell biomechanics. Specifically, it deals with the binding of membrane-bound proteins to the actin cytoskeleton and focal adhesion points as well as with their influence on the visco/elastic/plastic behavior in cells, using biochemical and biophysical methods. In addition, Professor Goldmann is studying the function of focal adhesion proteins on cellular traction, motility, and chemical signaling in 2D and 3D environments.
Professor Wolfgang H. Goldmann, PhD is a German/American citizen. He studied Medicine at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich and later Physical Biochemistry at the University of Bristol, England, where he received his PhD in 1990. He then moved back to Munich to take up a position under the direction of Professor Erich Sackmann at the Biophysics Department of the Technical University. From 1995 to 2004 he worked at Harvard Medical School in Boston under the auspices of Professor Amin Arnaout and Professor Don Ingber. He was a lecturer in Physical Cell Biology and Biochemistry until he left. In 2004, he spent his sabbatical as a visiting Professor at the Center for Medical Physics and Technology, Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, and he is now a W2-Professor.
